StratoSTAR by HIRO, also known as Hirokí, is a member of The Weather Channel (TWC) fandom specializing in custom renditions of the Local on the 8s content, especially earlier graphical styles of the IntelliStar 2 HD.

Background and concept

The StratoSTAR by HIRO YouTube channel was created on May 17, 2023.[3] The channel's creation came after Hirokí successfully revitalized an IntelliStar 2 HD unit the winter prior. After several months of trial and error, he achieved a stable setup with the unit ideal for producing content for the channel. In defining the impression and ambience he wanted his content to have, Hirokí thought of a hypothetical aesthetic genre in which Frutiger Aero would be combined with an edgy Emo/Scene genre via the use of abrasive Alternative Rock/Punk tracks. In addition, this genre of content would contain occasional references to prior playlists used by TWC circa 2008-2013. Thus Hirokí coined the genre Frutiger-Emo, a genre he believed would to help provide the best of all the atmospheric elements he wanted to achieve: Aero, edginess, and nostalgia. The naming scheme behind StratoSTAR by HIRO keeps somewhat with the continuity of The Weather Channel's naming scheme for the IntelliStar:

  • Stratos - codename for an internal hardware component
  • STAR - Satellite Transponder Addressable Receiver
  • by HIRO - by Hirokí.

Present

At present, Hirokí works to bring the viewers of the channel new content utilizing experimental designs, exclusive music edits/remixes, and memorable severe weather documentation if and when possible. When creating highly custom content on the i2HD platform, he has documented some hardware errors and unusual graphical anomalies. Some of his recent content has included graphical recreations of older Weather Star local forecast presentations on the i2HD platform.

Content

A large number of content seen on StratoSTAR by HIRO is either custom or heavily modified from pre-existing product sets and is largely unique to the channel. Hirokí describes these product sets as such:

Fully custom content

  • Aurora by HIRO [National] - visually a recreation of the 2009-2013 National Forecast seen on Dish Network.
  • NatAXIO by HIRO - a completely custom emergency feed, used when content error(s) and/or other miscellaneous faults occur. Design language is based off of a flat, modern, and simplistic design.
  • StratoLITE by HIRO - a new look on the Local Forecast, but with even less time consumed! Serif fonts to help bring professionalism and a business-like feel, mixed with other font faces to help mix a small amount of modernness. Included is an exclusive 4+1 day forecast where 4 days are show with in-depth forecast narratives, and an extra day that only provides an abstract forecast.
  • StratoSTAR XL by HIRO - visually a recreation of the original Weather Star XL's domestic V3 graphical package, with era-original Vocal Local. Made of fully custom (excluding background image, and icons) re-created graphical elements. Some animation and graphical differences are present, helping to make it different from the original graphics style.
  • StratoSTAR XL by HIRO v5 - based off of the more recent revisions of the IntelliStar 2 XD graphical version, ported with the limitations of the Weather Star XL in mind.

Modified content from pre-existing products

  • Aurora by HIRO - based off of the original "Azul" graphical set seen on the IntelliStar 2 HD during its debut, but heavily modified to revamp animation flow and the color palette, to best accommodate the StratoSTAR by HIRO branding.
  • Aptos by HIRO - based off the later revisions of Enhanced, adjusting font faces to help provide a more premium feel/style.
  • Arctic by HIRO - just like Aurora by HIRO, this graphical package is based off the original 'Azul' graphical package. This graphical package brings retina burning bright silver, white, and grey hues. While originally intend for cold weather climates, this package is still used occasionally during warmer months of the year, and for various locations.
  • Enhanced V1 by HIRO - visually a recreation of the original version of the 2013 Rebranded graphical package for domestic IntelliStar 2 HD, based off the later revision of Enhanced with reverted changes.
  • Midnight by HIRO - again, based off the original 'Azul' graphical package, but with a custom-made narrated multi-day extended forecast in place of a 7-day forecast. Dark hues of magenta, purple, and black soothe the eyes and the mind as the music tracks usually used with this graphical set are more night related and calmer than that of the daytime playlist.
