Bill Keneely is a former on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel. He was among the network's initial on-air talent at the time of its launch in 1982 and remained there until 2010.

Early life and education

Keneely was raised in Wayne, New Jersey. He stated that he went to grade school with Tom Cruise there. Keneely's interest in weather began around age 5, and he later recalled a large winter storm in his area from February 9-10, 1969, which was his favorite weather event.[1] Keneely stated about this event, "It was the first 'mega' snow storm I remember well. In Wayne, approximately 20 inches of snow fell (from) late Saturday night till Sunday night. School stayed shut that entire week!"[2]

Keneely graduated with a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from Plymouth State College of The University of New Hampshire in 1979. He would go on to finish "two quarters of graduate work in meteorology from September 1979 to March 1980" at Florida State University.[3]

Career

Keneely began his career as a broadcast meteorologist upon graduation, becoming a weekend meteorologist for WTVT-TV in Tampa, Florida.[2] He joined The Weather Channel to become one of its initial on-camera meteorologists (OCMs) in March 1982, two months prior to its official launch.[3]

During the brief run of The Weather Channel's spinoff in the United Kingdom from 1996 to 1998, Bill Keneely served as one of the network's OCMs,[4] possibly due to a shortage of male on-air talent at the time of the network's launch.[5] He was the sole American OCM on the network, and as he was still appearing on-air in the United States, it is most likely he contributed segments to the British network remotely.

Near the end of his career, from early 2009 to 2010, Keneely served as one of the co-hosts of PM Edition alongside Adam Berg and Kim Perez.[6] Prior to that, he had hosted Weekend View alongside Kelly Cass.[1] He was laid off from the network for unclear reasons in July 2010,[3][7] being the last of The Weather Channel's original on-air talent still remaining at that time.

Personal life

After his time at The Weather Channel, Keneely left the field of meteorology altogether, becoming owner of a frozen yogurt parlor in the Atlanta area from 2010 to 2012.[3][8] Around the same time, he began to work as a real estate agent[9] and later also took up a position as an automobile salesman in April 2015.[3] Outside of his career, Keneely enjoys outdoor activities such as golfing, hiking with family, water sports, and skiing,[2] with his favorite vacation spots being Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Litchfield Beach, South Carolina.[1] He is a fan of the New York Yankees baseball and New York Giants football teams.[1]
