Notes for further explanation are given below items or groups of items.

Lost media

Music

  • TWC network brand theme, 1991-1996
    • Exists in low quality: the theme exists in era VHS recordings but has not been identified and located in stock music collections.
  • TWC show and network brand themes, 1998-2003
    • Exists in low quality: the theme exists in era VHS recordings but the composer has not been identified.
  • TWC show and network brand themes, 2008-Unknown/Unclear
    • Exists in low quality: the theme exists in era recordings but the composer has not been identified.
  • Trammell Starks - "After The Rain", 1996
    • Partially found in low quality: Some recordings including the track have been recorded, but this track has never been released in full, CD quality among the 39 other tracks Starks' made for TWC. [1][2]
  • Weatherscan tracks, 2003-2022
    • All found in good quality, artists/library source remain unknown: After Weatherscan Local rebranded to Weatherscan when transitioning to the IntelliStar, a new set of tracks were used among the existing Trammell Starks tracks used on Weatherscan Local (some of which were removed). Multiple iterations of the playlists are seen from 2003-2007. The debut playlist in 2003 contained new production tracks, most of which have no traceable artist. From 2014-2015, composer Jack Mascari would upload three tracks featured on Weatherscan on the older playlists on his presumed YouTube channel, in addition to one that would be present on the final playlist from 2007. [3][4][5] Many other tracks from the period have been identified to include samples from the digital audio workstation software Reason.[6] Mascari has stated to use Reason as his choice of DAW in addition to composing for TWC, making it incredibly likely he also composed other unidentified tracks from this period that share his jazz rock style of music.[7] In addition to this, there are other tracks included in the earlier playlists that have also been featured on The Weather Channel Latin America as early as 2002.[8][9][10] From 2006-2007, many new tracks not heard on TWC Latin America or believed to be from Mascari debuted on Weatherscan. These newer tracks are believed to be from a library source, as some have been heard on the 2008 National Geographic documentary Human Footprint.[11][12]No artist or library source for these tracks is known to be credited online.

    • Partially found: this was a combination of two stock clips; one of the clips has been located.

    • Likely within currently unarchived ArtBeats stock footage collections or other brand collections.

Network programs and recordings

Despite fan efforts to record The Weather Channel, due to it running continuously over many decades, the vast majority of live programming remains lost. Besides this general lack of archival, the following more specific programming and recording items are known to be lost:

  • Most episodes of Atmospheres, weekly longform documentary program; aired 2000-2003
  • Many episodes of The Weather Classroom, educational program for schools; aired circa 1993-2007 with reruns running into later years
    • Various episodes of the program have been found and archived; however, it is hard to quantify how many episodes existed due to the series' long run.
  • Various segments of the TWC Hurricane Katrina 10-year anniversary special in which original 2005 hurricane footage was rebroadcast, aired August 2015
  • Footage of Local on the 8s/Local Forecast from The Weather Channel UK, The Weather Channel Germany, and The Weather Channel Netherlands; no footage of the local forecast on any of these networks has been found, although some footage of the national local forecast exists for The Weather Channel Netherlands.
  • Footage of a dual feed test in New York City in 2015 viewers in New York saw a show with Paul goodloe while the rest of the country saw weather underground. Footage of this test is rare and is considered lost media.

How to help

Individuals interested in archival of TWC-related media should consult like-minded members of the community. Much archival coordination, such as the effort to archive Weatherscan Local backgrounds, has taken place in the Triple C TWC Community Discord server. If a discovery is made, an upload to Internet Archive as well as multiple local backups are the best methods to ensure long-term preservation of media items.
