Desktop Weather by The Weather Channel, later The Weather Channel App for Windows, was a former software offering by the Weather Channel.

Desktop Weather was released in October 2001, in reaction to WeatherBug's release the previous year.[1][2] The software ran on Windows 95 or later and required 64 MB of memory and a 5 MB hard drive.[3] By 2002, memory requirements had increased to 128 MB, and the Weather Channel added a subscription option for an ad-free experience which cost $4 per month or $30 per year.[4] By 2005, Desktop Weather ran on Windows 2000 and later systems, with the subscription offering faster radar updates, multiple saved locations, and traffic maps. The Weather Channel also introduced a partnership with Major League Baseball to allow the use of MLB team logos in the application.[5]

In 2006, The Weather Channel released a Dashboard Widget and screensaver for Macintosh computers.[6] By 2008, it had also released a Windows screensaver, a toolbar for Internet Explorer 7, an Extension for Firefox, and gadgets for the Vista Sidebar and iGoogle.[7]

In 2011, The Weather Channel heavily redesigned the desktop application and renamed it "The Weather Channel App for Windows".[8][9] In 2012, The Weather Channel released an app for Windows 8 devices.[10]

Separate pages for The Weather Channel's desktop offerings ended in 2014, with all Weather Channel apps promoted on one page, albeit with the desktop apps continuing to be offered. By this time, another redesign of the Windows apps had occurred.[11] By 2017, The Weather Channel had deemphasized its desktop offerings, merging the Windows Phone and Desktop apps into one listing in the Apps page.[12] The Windows app was discontinued by 2020.[13]
